Forks of Credit

Previous Town | Next Town

Coming up from the floor north from Streetsville, the CPR line makes its way up the side of the Niagara Escarpment.  This is quite a climb.  Snelgrove, on the plane below is at elevation 841 feet.  Orangeville is at 1397 feet.   One of the most picturesque parts of the line is where it crosses over the Credit River against the wall of the escarpment.  It's called Forks of Credit.  The name comes from the fact that two main parts of the river join.  Many movies have been made there.

Just before coming to the small station the line goes over a large bridge, 80' high and 270 feet long.  Impressive looking curved bridge with a super elevation.  Thus I had to have this cliff hugging town on the layout.  Set in behind the furnace was the only place I could get it to fit.  The passing track is supposed to have been 16 cars long (8 feet), not possible in the space I have.

The only problem with this town was there was no industry, well, not in the 1950's.  At the turn of the century there was a spur that ran behind the station, and around the cliff into a quarry called the Crowsnest.  They extracted lime stone and sand stone blocks for building construction.  I had the room to include the quarry.  So in it went.

The quarry will have a block loading track with a traveling overhead crane.  There will be a passing track that will hug the bank of the river, a crushed stone loading track and a lime kin loading track.  The track that runs into the quarry will hug the side of a gorge.  It will be a nice scenic area.

Layout Photos

Inside the quarry.  The building on the left is the stone cutter and crusher building.  Cut stone is trucked down to the overhead traveling crane to be loaded onto flats and gons.  The river will run directly to the right.
Quarry from the lead in track.  The track to the right ends up behind the station at Forks.  The building to the front right is the lime kiln, more structures will be built for this.  The bridge into Elora is temporarily removed, once in place it will run over top of the quarry.
